The Congestion Mitigation Task Force is a step in the right direction. I agree that there needs to be more focus on public transportation and transit in general. I somewhat agree that new roads should not be built--but I belive that making existing roads more efficient, accessible and generally easier to use (and if that means getting rid of some roads, then so be it) would be a better way to go.

A complete overhaul of ol' Eisenhower's idea is desperately needed. It was a good idea at the time--for military uses. Back then, cars were not center-stage. Now, though, we need to consolidate.

And make them all priced. OOOOOh I said it. User fees!!! I would totally pay $2.00 to go from my house (in Kelleytown -- an area in unincorporated Northeastern Henry County) to Atlanta. Currently, I have to drive to either I-20 (and get stuck for hours) or drive through Stockbridge to I-75 and have a not too bad ride. Or I could just about the same distance to a McDonough ingress to I-75 and get stuck in Eagle's Landing/Hudson Bridge traffic. I don't think so.

My two cents.

If 10% of this city got on bikes we wouldn't have to worry about it, plus we wouldn't be so fat and stinky.

Here is some info from the fact sheet:
CMTF Mission: to develop and implement a process for project selection which:
* Emphasizes congestion relief and safety
* Utilizes quick-fix operational initiatives
* Identifies and prioritizes major capital initiatives to expedite
* Will adopt a congestion target against which progress will be measured
Time Frame: By 12/31/2005, the Task Force will provide recommendations for incorporation into the regional and statewide transportation planning process.
Task Force Composition: two members representing each of the Boards of
*       Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC)
* Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT)
* Georgia Regional Transportation Authority (GRTA)
* State Road & Tollway Authority (SRTA)

So their mission is pretty broad. Whatever they could recommend is entirely up in the air. And, on top of that, MARTA is not on the task force.

Is this task force going to recommend projects for federal funds that come through the Federal Highway Administration's Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Program?
