This Et-lanan agrees with your assessment, loves the city, finds a way to keep the car drive short... Finds it amazingly different from years ago, but even better. Doesn't call those that moved here or northerners "yankees" though, 'cause in my southern mind, Yankees are what used to be all citizens of this beautiful country, and GA is indeed one of the prettiest states there is, even when you venture beyond 285.

No need to call them Yankees, nor us Rebels. Unless, we're still mad about something, maybe because they drink Pepsi...

BTW, when the new Monopoly comes out this summer, the railroads will be replaced by airports -- O'Hare, LAX, JFK and Hartsfield-Jackson.

Love the blog piece on the name "Atlanna" (the correct pronunciation of it). I detest the whole "brand Atlanta" campaign, particularly their lame-assed song. As long as hip-hop wallows in the superficiality of hoes, bling, drugs and drink, is that shit that we really want to be proud of? Damn, I hope not.

Aside from that, I think what is happening with downtown and the immediate surrounding area is wonderful. It is so nice to go downtown and see families spending time and money there as opposed to seeing boarded-up storefronts with nothing but bums and rif-raf holding sway over the place.

On the point of downtown revitalization, it is great to see it happening on a large scale and in reality versus some damn politician yammering about how some slightly spruced-up street (pedestrian mall)is going to be the savior of downtown; trust me, I have been around enough years to have seen the latter.

Lastly, I have heard that a ground-breaking for the restoration of the Winecoff Hotel has finally been held and that restoration is now underway, though I have seen nothing about it in the news. It's about time! I know the restored Winecoff will be a splendid asset to downtown.

Thankfully, no one has started naming cities with alphabet soup like luxury car manufacturers name their vehicles.

I think we could use a few more roads, since they are in such short supply that we have to keep renaming them every time someone famous dies.

That was The City in Mind. Having read both books now, I'd have to say that "The Geography of Nowhere" was much better.

Was that the Kunstler book where he apparently wrote the Atlanta chapter from a hotel room, and couldn't be bothered to figure out whether "Cherokee" referred to a city or a county? Loathed that smug chapter.

Haha. From an Atlanta-native (in the CITY - no 'burbs here) - I love you for this post. Next I'd love a breakdown of "Peachtree". ;)

To support your points on optimism and room to grow - in the first paragraph of the Atlanta entry on wikipedia:
"Atlanta is arguably a poster-child for cities worldwide experiencing rapid urban sprawl, population growth, and commercial development."
That's always amused me.
