Why didn’t you tell us you were broadcasting in HD? Three different streams all the time! A feed for the news junkies? Yes! One for Classical Music to keep broadcast access to one of our greatest art forms? Yes. Plus the regular stream! These same streams are echoed on the Web.

For those of you unfamiliar with HD radio, it’s a digital signal which new HD radio receivers can pick up and it sends out a digitally encoded signal. The standard allows for up to three formats in roughly each frequency range. WABE is using HD1 for it’s regular signal, HD2 for its classical music stream, and HD3 for the all news channel. Best of all, this is in the broadcast band! It’s free! All you need is a receiver.
Right now, for the most part, HD radios are a bit pricey, but more and more manufacturers are making them. However, Radio Shack has a model which if you purchase before Christmas 2006 is less than $150 with Rebate. It’s not the fanciest, but you’ll have 40 channels of radio in FM alone and no monthly fee to pay!
Now… if I could only get an HD radio card for my treo….

Lois is fab - no doubt about it.
However, have you ever listened to John Lemley in HD? Even yummier than on analog! Also, if you have a moment, check out the WABE website. I had no idea he was so young OR so hot. Where’s the WABE studio webcam when you need one?!

I bought an HD radio just to be able to listen to WABE’s (at that time still future) HD news station. I do like being able to listen to the news when I’m in my car during the middle of the day or late in the evening, but I still wish that the primary 90.1 signal was more news-oriented. It kind of sucks that I can only listen to this content in my car or that I’m expected to shell out a lot of money for a new radio just to get the kind of NPR station that folks in other big cities have.

are you kidding about lemley? that guy is ssterrible. is this amatuer night at the center for speech disabilities? why cant he get anything right? even after reading ethe same 4 lines for 3 hours, he still messes them up. ridiculous. will admit he’s handsome, but that hardly seems a qualifacation in aural media. makes wabe look(actually sound) bad.
