Death of Echo
The Echo Lounge is closed.
Some say it’s because the owner didn’t have the strength to keep the club going. Some say it’s a dispute with the City of Atlanta over a liquor license. What ever the reason, this venue is a loss.
It anchored the southern end of the commercial village of East Atlanta. Losing this venue will hurt both the community and the music scene around Atlanta, as another independent venue bites the dust.
It also means that one of Atlanta’s best Sound Engineers is looking for projects.
Rumors are a theater will move into that space, but no one is quite sure when…

As a resident of East Atlanta, I view the closing of the Echo Lounge as very sad. I’m more of a folk and baroque music sort of guy, but the presence of the Echo Lounge added to the mix in East Atlanta, and being wildly diverse is part of the character of the neighborhood.
East Atlanta has reached enough of a critical mass with respect to a variety of businesses that it’s doubtful the community as a whole will be hurt by the closing, but it was an interesting and unique place, and I’m very sorry for its departure.

One followup comment is that one thing that makes the closing of the Echo Lounge particularly sad to me is that the building is visible from my front porch. That may sound like an odd observation, but looking over at the Echo Lounge always reminded me of how far our commercial area has come over the past decade or so.

Yikes, I shook Jon Langford’s hand there! I’ll miss it, too.
