Atlanta’s Irish Pubs Rated

We here at Bloglanta know what’s really important to a community!  It’s the chance to Drink!  Sing! and chase those blasted sheep out of your head!!!
What mechanism does a city have to remedy this?  Irish Pubs! As Joe pointed out here, not everything labeled an Irish Pub is all that Irish, but there are several quality candidates.  We rated them on atmosphere, Irish music, food, & drink.  We also awarded bonus points where needed.   Thanks to Joe, Ted, Diane, Holly, Connie,& Andrew for helping out with this project!
Limerick Junction is the Champion of  all the Irish Pubs inside the Perimeter.  It’s a great value.  Food is very affordable and tasty.   They have Irish singing more nights a week than anyone else, it’s not pretentious and the crowd knows the words and when not to clap.   Drinks were good (they knew how to make an Irish nail right off the bat), and an actual Irish person works there!

Fado…
Oy, really we’re still waiting for Fado.  As Ted said, “if Disney did an Irish pub..” .  The building is great, though not well set up for music.  They force the musicians into the front.  What’s worse that only have actual Irish music on Mondays and it’s more a jam band than pros.  Still, it’s traditional and that’s cool.  Food and drinks were ordinary and considering the prices, not a great value.  The crowd were all jerks.  They talked over the music, didn’t know the rhythms and the words and want the keep to put on basketball….

Meehans was interesting.  For full disclosure the official visit was to the Alpharetta location as they are the ones that most often have actual Irish music.  The word is that the ITP others are not nearly as good.  The problem with Meehans was that the food was not great and it was pricey.  There were atmosphere problems as well.  There was not enough room for the people who wanted to here the music.  It was too loud and again, it was competing with sports on the TV.  Also, for house music, the played ABBA.  Not Luka Bloom covering Abba, but the Swedish stuff.   Not a good sign.  Also, when someone screwed up on ‘Finnegans Wake’ they did not buy the house a round as required.  Still the spontaneous jigging was a nice touch.

Irish Bred
is located in Underground Atlanta.  They don’t have live Irish music, but the food is good and reasonably priced.  Atmosphere is fine and the bar is well stocked.  Irish music was playing in the background.  Joe recommends the pie.

James Joyce has the most
potential and does the least with it of all the Irish Pubs in town.  It’s located in Avondale Estates, it’s a beautiful space, the people who hang out there are neat.  However, there isn’t much Irish food on the menu and their Juke Box has no traditional Irish music (U2 doesn’t count).  They also have no Irish Music performances.  It is a fun place and if you want a beer, I recommend it, but don’t go thinking it’s really authentic Irish.

I didn’t think I would find a place better than Limerick and ITP, I didn’t.  However, I did find a better Irish place right beside the Gladiators arena.  The Loafing Leprechaun is terrific!  Excellent food!  Irish fare is the starting point but it’s all home made and has some cool twists.  Great Atmosphere!  Again, there was not enough room for the music and the people who wanted to here it, but the band, Keltic Kudzu was really worth hearing!  It was an excellent experience and came in just above it’s intown friends.

Well, let’s judge the judges: how many of the seven have actually been to Ireland? I have to ask because of what I (mis?)perceive as a negative tone when you say “it’s more a jam band than pros,” and then you go on to say “but no sing alongs” as a negative. I’m trying very hard right now to remember through the Guinness and Jameson-induced haze over my memories of Ireland, but I don’t recall a sing-along in five weeks of hitchhiking all over the island. During my three years playing Irish music myself in Phoenix, I’d guess what you might call sing-alongs accounted for fewer than one in five tunes at our Sunday night seisiuns. And I haven’t been to Fado in years, but when I first moved here the Monday night music was an open seisiun, free for anyone who can pick, fiddle, or bang to join in — as a good seisiun should be. But I’m sure some sing-along faves like The Moonshiner and Whiskey in the Jar are within their repertoire, if you ask ‘em nicely. :-)
Thanks for putting this list together, though. Good stuff to know, and I’m definitely going to hoof it up to Duluth to check out the Loafing Lep!

For the record, I have been to Ireland. However, perhaps we should have clarified that we were rating these pubs as Irish-American Institutions.

I must also point out that I love ABBA and I dissent from my learned brother Robert’s decision to deduct 1 point from Meehan’s.

Also, where is the love? No one invited me to the Loafing Leprechaun.

Interesting fact:- The Loafing Lep was designed & built by the same company who built Fado - The Irish Pub Company they are called and they are really based in Ireland in Dublin so I guess they know what they are doing. Don’t get the reference to Disney????

    Robert,
Thanks for the nice comments and for supporting celtic music in Atlanta. Keltic Kudzu will be back at the Loaf on Aug 13. We are also having our CD release party at the Red Light Cafe in Sept. Bring a crowd and we’ll toss back a couple of pints. Thanks again,
    Bryan
