An Open Letter to the #23 Bus
Dear #23 Bus,
Why you got to do me like this? I thought we had something going. For over a year now, you and me, we’ve been like this. [Holds up index and middle finger, crossed.] But then today… what’s up, #23 Bus? There I was, at the bus stop at 15th & Peachtree at 2:00, ready to head up to Piedmont Hospital for my 2:30 doctor’s appointment. Where were you, #23? You totally stood me up. As it happened, I had driven to work that day because I thought it was going to be raining all day; so I sprinted back to my car in the Colony Square parking garage and drove - yes, you heard me, don’t act so shocked - to my appointment, barely making it on time.
Please explain yourself, #23. It shouldn’t be a big deal to go ~2 miles up the road in the middle of the afternoon, should it? I want to commit to you, I really do - but you’re making it so difficult. If only you’d treat me right, #23, I wouldn’t have to keep going back to my car.
Love Always,
Amber

That bus is supposed to be one of the best routes at Arts Center station — I mean, just look at that schedule. It’s practically running all the time.
According to the schedule, actually, there are supposed to be #23 busses leaving at 1:53, 2:08, then 2:23. So.. if you waited longer than 15 minutes, then.. yeah.. that bus definitely stood you up.
Harumph.

I was definitely there for more than 15 minutes.
Don’t get me started on the time I stood there for about 45 minutes in 16 degree weather. (Yes, yes, I know I could have walked home in less time than that… but you know how it is, you keep thinking, “Surely the bus will be here any minute…”)
Overall the 23 is good. I take it to work most every day. But it needs to learn about the value of commitment.

I rode bus #23 back in junior high. Our driver was an old guy named Bill who looked like a skinnier Wilfred Brimley. Actually, every kid who grew up in the 80s thinks every old man looks like Wilfred Brimley, but I digress. His bus #23 was tricked out with AC/Delco truck speakers all down each side. Six of them. And as long as we were relatively quiet, he keep the tunes flowin’ from our local rock station, KZ106. Bill was the coolest bus driver ever.
Oh. You’re talking about MARTA. Nevermind.
