Wow, what a nasty comment!

My approach is to donate to charities with a good track record: Atlanta Community Food Bank, Atlanta Union Mission, Salvation Army, and my church's shelter for women. I never give change to panhandlers, because: (a) many are con artists - I've seen guys who were panhandling for years suddenly start saying they were "Katrina refugees" in fall 2005; (b) many use it to buy alcohol or drugs; and (c) it's just a dumb way to organize help for people who really need it. We need not so much "spontaneous acts of random kindness" and more well-considered, deliberate acts of charity.

If you want to know which charities are effective and make good use of their donations, there are several online resources. Also, you can try volunteering, for a first-hand look at effectiveness.

In response to Chad's comments about "don’t count on this house sticking around forever", the property can't be developed beyond what is there now. In 1991 AT&T transfered the development rights of the property to gain approval for higher density in the building they built behind it Part of this process is recording negative covenants against development on the land where the Castle sits, meaning that even if the land is sold to another owner, that new owner can not development the land. Also, the building is a designated Landmark.

The solution is to offer them free bus tickets to where ever they want to go.

I like the idea of setting up a bum zoo. Fence in Woodruff park. Install some vending machines so Atlantan's can toss crackers, chicken wings (the bums loves 'em some chicken wings), and other homeless treats to the zoo residents. It might even be nice to have some plaques set up around the park to help the locals identify different species of urban outdoorsman.

Until either of these solutions are implemented, I'll continue on my current path. Most of the time I ignore them, but other times I like to give them quarters for tricks. Sit, lie down, rollover, fetch are simple tricks that any bum can do. I never fail to get a laugh when I see some vagrant go running down the street in pursuit of a rolling quarter. They're faster than they look.

brad is right. And my information is that Romo was not squeezed out by higher rents, but rather suffered the fate of many galleries around the country. It's a hard business (as is the restaurant business); it takes about 5 years to start making a profit on a gallery. It's a shame, because Sam Romo has an excellent eye and was showing adventurous work.

I live in castleberry and am a member of the CNA. More galleries have moved in within the past 2 years then left. Don't know where you're getting your facts but I suggest you go to the castleberry site and take a look.

You impeded traffic and blocked the whole highway.

I will never understand why law abiding citizens would be afraid of other law abiding citizens carrying a firearm. HB89 pertains to 3% of the population of Georgia.....The 3% who have gone through the FBI Background Check,Finger Printing process and been permitted to carry a concealed firearm. This legislation does not open the door for everyone to go buy a gun (which by the way you also have a background check to accomplish legally) and start carrying it on MARTA.

Consider this.......The last multiple shooting that made the news(New Life Churchl) was ended by a CCW Permit Holder prior to Law Enforcement arriving.........How many more people would have been killed or injured had those CCW holders not been there?

And yes, I realize that I just stereotyped gun owners as racist "gun nuts." I apologize for that, but my friends who are level-headed and intelligent about their gun ownership sometimes seem to be in the minority.
